Aero-Static Dome

Name: Aero-Static Dome

Date: 2014

Client: NIKE

Location: Palazzo Clerici, Milan

During Milan Design Week 2014, MINIWIZ collaborated with Nike to unveil the Aero-Static Dome. The revolutionary structure, designed as a dramatic re-intepretation of Nike's groundbreaking Flyknit technology, was supported by a helium-filled canopy and showcased at the courtyard of Palazzo Clerici to celebrate the launch of the Nike Kobe 9 Elite Low HTM.

Inspired by both da Vinci’s triangular parachute and Bell’s tetrahedral kite, the unprecedented Aero-Static Dome was the first of its kind to use zero compressive elements. MINIWIZ pushed innovation even further by engineering the system of weights and wires to counter the activity of the dome, balancing it both vertically and horizontally whilst displaying a unique and futuristic design. The building effectively utilized the laws of nature instead of resisting them, most notably from the forces of the wind - similar to the technology of Flyknit which channels the pressure of moving feet to activate support. At the bottom of the dome, stunning glass cases served as anchors for the canopy while premiering the Kobe 9 Elite sneakers.

MINIWIZ constructed the installation with environmentally sustainable materials using recycled post-consumer waste, ensuring it was extremely light and easy to reassemble elsewhere. Striving always for a low carbon footprint, MINIWIZ successfully paired the Aero-Static Dome with Nike’s sustainable and lightweight Flyknit technology to once again design an unforgettable installation.
